Building these DIY raised garden beds using cedar boards turned out to be a fairly simple DIY and we knocked it out in a day or two. Learn how to make your own DIY raised garden beds using cedar boards so you can garden right in your backyard.
Let's jump straight into the step-by-step raised garden bed tutorial!
STEP 1: Before you get started building your DIY raised garden beds using cedar boards, you need to make sure the ground is ready.
- Level out uneven ground
- Remove rocks or other debris on the ground
- Prepare under-ground sprinkler supply lines to line up with your raised garden beds
STEP 2: Whichever way you dig the post holes for the corner of your garden bed, be sure to dig down 12” and make the hole at least 10” by 10”.
STEP 3: Cut your posts to size - about 4 feet tall if you prefer tall beds like we have.
STEP 4: Mixing the concrete and water in the hole, rather than mixing it up and then pouring it in will save you time and clean up.
STEP 5: Let concrete set for 1 day.
STEP 6: When the concrete is hardened, attach a plastic liner to the inside of the garden bed to prolong its life.
STEP 7: First cut your cedar boards to size. Attach the cedar boards on the post using 1 5/8" deck screws.
STEP 8: Fill raised garden bed. You can use gravel and sand to the bottom of your raised garden beds so they will drain well. Then cover the top with soil.
STEP 9: Plant your garden and enjoy!

Those are some extreme garden beds. They look fantastic. Most people just build them directly on the ground. Things change and they may want to move them instead of having them permanent.

nice to have your own home grown gardens. i like rocks instead of grass. what kind of rocks did u have @ ur back yard?
How do you keep the post from rotting in the concerts? Had to rebuild our deck because it was like the concreat rotted our support posts. And yes they were treated post.
Love these! But question: I rent, and can't use concrete to anchor them in the ground. Is there another affordable way to build raised beds of this size? I know brackets are the most common way to go... if anyone has any advice I'd love to hear it.
