Here is a guide on how to clean a washing machine with vinegar and baking soda – clean without toxic chemicals. This post has an easy way to clean front loading washing machines, but this method should work on top loading washers as well.
After having breast cancer survivor, I am more cautious about the chemicals we use in our house. I know, it is impossible to eliminate all chemicals, but if I can, I try to substitute gentler cleaning products in exchange for harsh chemicals. I figured out a way to clean my washing machine without using toxic chemicals.

Front load washers get NASTY down here in FLaDuh. I use vinegar to clean mine often. Also useful is leaving the door open when not in use. -
