there is an iron cleaner in a tube - I think it is called faultless, don't have one on hand now. I bought it in walmart follow the directions and it works great. I originally saw it on pinterest

Soap rubbed on plate of Dry Iron and rubbed on old cloth when warm OR Pre Boiled water with drop of Vinegar in Steam Iron, also on old cloth as will splutter then soap to clean plate. I do believe you can buy something commercial to do this job (descale)
