Formerly working in a nursing home as a maintenance tech. The neoprene rubber on some wheelchair wheels starts to break down over time. There are wheels with soft plastic rather than neoprene wheels which are gray that don't break down. It may be time to replace the wheels. Also consider replacing the casters. They are terrible in marking floors.

The hard plastic coating a couple of you mentioned-- I wonder if the spray shine for black wall tires on a car is basically the same. But one of the warnings is not to spray the bottoms of the tires because they may slide instead of stop. Could that be a danger on the wheelchair tires?
