You'll need something that injects water and sucks it back out. If you don't have a carpet scrubber, I recommend the Rug Doctor. They are $30 for 24 hour. They work a lot better than home scrubbers. If it's really bad or has a lot of stains, spray the entire carpet with the cleaner and let it sit for an hour before you scrub.
Scrub with cleaning solution then scrub with hot water once or twice to rinse.
Cari is right on, but don't use hot water to clean, can set the stains. Use tap water to. Clean and rinse thoroughly with cold water.
Or bite the bullet and call in the pros. Carpet should be professionally cleaned once a year for optimum longevity. I have lots of pets, so mine get cleaned more often.
We purchased a Rug Doctor home carpet shampooer. It works almost as good as the rental and has attachments for carpet and hard floors. It really pulls the dirty water and rinse water out really well.
