One good habit to keep your fireplace safe is to sweep away the ashes in the fireplace after each use. Also, vacuum or dust the area in and around the hearth weekly to prevent a buildup of dust and soot.Helpful Reply -

Burn a log especially designed to break up soot in the chimney (Chimney Sweep or something like that). You may have to burn a couple if the chimney has not been cleaned in a while. When the chimney has cooled, the soot should fall into the fire box.Helpful Reply -
