I add vinegar to my wash for the rinse cycle -

While we were in India and had to hand wash our clothes in a bucket, my friend used to add some hair conditioner to the final rinse. Her clothes came out fantastic! Super soft and smelling very nice. -

This will depend on your water. Have it tested, and do research to answer the question of keeping it soft. I use Vinegar, with detergent., this makes a world of diff. I use this always, not just to soak when I get something new. For this will also help the color to set, and will not wash away. I know there is a place to look for recipes, so look for that, under DIY/questions ... then list the main topic. Hoping this helps. J.
