I use Old English to clean mine. It is a furniture polish but it cleans and treats the wood at the same time. If it is very very dirty (as in a rented apartment or house) I use a tire cleaner from the Auto store. It does not hurt the wood at all. It should be applied to a small area, let set ten minutes or so, and scrub with a toothbrush. Repeat as needed. Here is what I have used when I cleaned apartments:
