Vintage aluminum colanders- the kind covered in stars- are seriously perfect for a patriotic repurpose! The star design in the metal can really make it stand out...and I see these exact colanders at antiques shops and thrift stores all the time.
Since mine was dented and starting to rust, I really didn't want to use it to strain food anymore...and since I've already made a planter out of a colander before, I wanted to do something different. But those stars were really speaking to me. So I did a little stitching- and I just loved the result!!
To make it into a centerpiece, you could fill it with anything you want! I chose to use easy-to-find, lightweight decorative rattan spheres that I painted to match.
Now it needed one final touch- and a little height- to truly transform into a party piece- small, vintage desktop American flags! (Head over to my blog post for all the how-to details! )
Fun, festive, and easy to make!! I also thought about filling it with baseballs as an alternative- hurray for the red, white, and blue...and repurposed!
