Here's an easy way to make handmade coasters for gift giving that's sure to be hit this holiday season.
I found a set of plain cork coasters at the Goodwill, but you can get a set of cork squares at the craft store. Mine had a solid backing already, so you'll need to add a smooth backing by cutting out cardboard to fit the cork and glue on. Next, paint the smooth cardboard side with acrylic paint. While the paint is drying, separate the layers of the napkin, using the printed or decorative layer.
Next, coat a layer of mod podge over the dry painted side and place the printed layer of napkin on top. Use plastic wrap to smooth out the wrinkles and edges.
Allow the mod podge and napkin to dry. Once dry, add another layer of mod podge and let dry.
Remove the excess napkin by scraping off the side edges with sandpaper making sure the sides are free of napkin residue.
And finally, seal with a waterproof varnish to protect the finish.
Makes for a lovely gift!
