If you have the room between rows, put down some pavers to make paths around the different areas. I have never had a mud problem, but I keep my garden mulched with leaves from the fall and the grass that is cut in the summer. The only time I have trouble is after I till until I plant and mulch, then I just suck it up and get my shoes muddy. I have a pair of tennis shoes that are used only for the garden. Cardboard only last for a short time in wet situations, and boards, unless they are thick and somewhat wide, will sink in the mud and get covered with mud.

A pair of Wellington rubber boots and I also have a pair of rubber clogs made for gardening.

Try cement blocks. Or paving stones. They don't have to match, so look for left overs at stone and gravel lots, or at LoWes and Home Depot. Ask for a really good discount, and even look at broken tiles. They will last much longer than boards, yet can be moved if you redesign your garden. And grow your tomatoes and beans on tomato cages. Turn them upside down and bury the narrow end in the ground. Hope this helps. 😊

Spread straw throughout your whole garden, wear tall boots or ankle boots and use gloves.
