My dog needs a "panic room"!

I'd like to build a safe box/crate that my rat terrier can go to when it thunders, during the 4th of July fireworks and during hunting season. Something with a fan for cooling and padded to reduce noise. Any ideas?

  • Excellent idea! Talk to vet, as there are options. In extreme cases they can give them a mild sedative if absolutely necessary. I had a dog like that, but I only had to worry about it for a month in the summer around July 4th and NYE. Do you have an interior room or closet that you can retrofit for him or her? My golden retriever went into my closet. We put bed in there for her with a bowl of water. It was dark safe and the walls and all my hanging clothes baffled the noise for her. Another lab I had liked an interior bathroom for the same reason, so when it was bad, we just gave up the use of that room to keep him comfortable. They need proper airflow. You could modify a purchased crate with a portable fan, will take some fiddling as the fan should not blow directly on them for hours on end.

Wondering if you know they make “heavy”coats for dogs for panic and anxiety?

Have you heard about the Thunder Jacket for dogs. I have heard lots of good things about it. Maybe would save you a lot of work!
