Advent Calendar Made From Upcycled Shoe Organizer

ALTERNATE TITLE: Holy Crap It’s December 1 and I Haven’t Made My Advent Calendar Yet! This project is so late that I almost didn’t share it at all. Then, in the spirit of “keeping it real” I decided you should see it. Since this had to go together quickly I used things I already had around the house.
First, an over-the-door shoe organizer, which was holding a bunch of random junk.
Next, some paper treat bags I had in my stash. If you don’t have these you can easily cut holiday wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper down to size. (These aren’t the exact ones I used but you get the idea.)
Grab some old-fashioned clothespins (or tape if you don’t have any), tissue paper, and your advent gifts, and you’re ready to put it together. (TIP: You don’t have to have all your gifts ready on December 1. I usually buy things throughout the month and add them as I go.)

Oh, I almost forgot my favorite part! These FREE advent countdown tags from They’re absolutely adorable and Rebecca has done all the work so all we have to do is download, print, and cut. Thank you Rebecca!
Assembly is pretty self-explanatory. The treat bags or wrapping paper serve as a decorative front in each pocket. Then the advent gifts are wrapped in the tissue and placed in next. Lastly, the clothespin holds your tag in place. (I added a piece of washi tape to mine – couldn’t resist a red chevron.) And you’re done!
I'm really happy with how they turned out - even if it was a last minute scramble to get it done! Check out all the details on the blog.

Thank you, thank you. I have 3 grandsons and it would be a challenge to purchase/ build 3 Advent calendars. This way I have the space to put matchbox cars, candy, etc . Some of the Advent calenders only have about 1 1/2" spaces. This is great.

Wish I'd thought of this about 10 years ago! What a great idea and such a time saver. Thank you so much!
