Make an Easy Hanging Christmas Ball With This Tutorial
I love Christmas decor. It’s just such a fun time of year, and good decorations really help bring in the spirit. It’s so easy to go out and spend tons of money on cute seasonal decorations, but it’s also so easy to make them yourself. In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to make an awesome hanging Christmas ball that you can use as an ornament or any other type of decoration.
Tools and materials:
- Foam ball
- Small Christmas tree ornaments
- Bamboo skewers
- Corsage pin
- Pipe cleaner
Prep your materials
The first thing you’ll need to do is cut down your bamboo skewers. You’ll need a lot, so better to get that out of the way. Then open up all the ornaments by removing the little plastic pieces at the ends. They come off super easy, so just go ahead and pop them off.
Place sticks in the ornaments
Take a stick and dip it into your hot glue skillet, then just stick it into the ornament. Do this for all your ornaments, then let them dry. Once they dry, you’ll see that the hot glue formed a little bead, and the stick will be totally secure.
Insert your ornaments
All right, this part is super easy, but it will take you the most amount of time. Take your ornaments and poke the stick into the foam ball, all the way in. Continue inserting ornaments in a circular pattern, and keep going until the foam ball is completely covered in ornaments.
When there’s no more room left for ornaments, you’ll notice that you’ll still be able to see some white coming through. You can paint the foam ball ahead of time if you want, or you can use ribbon like I did to cover up those spaces. The way you’re going to insert the ribbon is super easy. Just grab the ribbon, without cutting it, and stick it over one of the white spaces, using a skewer to help push it in. Once it’s secure between the ornaments, it will stay in place.
Tie on some wire
Grab some wire and a corsage pin and tie the wire a few times around the bead of the pin. Then dip the pin in your glue and just poke it into the foam ball as deep as you can get it. You can use scissors or something like that to help you push it in.
Make a bow
Using the same ribbon you used earlier, make a bow with two loops and two tails. Then grab a pipe cleaner and wind it around the ribbon to secure it, leaving yourself about ½” to 1” of the pipe cleaner. Then take a bamboo skewer and wrap your pipe cleaner around it to give you a sturdier stem. Cut the stem down to size, dip it into the glue skillet, and poke it into the top of the foam ball, where your wire is.
That’s all there is to it! How amazing does this Christmas ornament ball look? It’s so fun to see it hanging, and if you’ve got it outside the wind will really help it spin around. The metallic is so shiny, I can see my face in it, so it definitely screams Christmas cheer. I recommend making a few of these to really get the effect, and you can play around with the colors as well! If you make this, I’d love to see how they turn out, so be sure to leave a picture in the comments!

Could you use toothpicks instead of cutting down bamboo skewers, or would they be too short?
