You do not need special tools to take apart pallets, a hammer and pry bar will do, just might take a bit longer and there may be some damage to the boards, but, for rustic signs, it adds character. -

May I add something? Wear heavy gloves to protect you from splinters and any mishaps with the nails you remove. Also protective goggles in case any nails go flying as you pry them off. Take your time and be careful and you will end up with neat old wood for your projects.
