Easy Dollar Store Coasters Makeover

Giving a new look to dollar store coasters is a budget friendly way to have coasters to match your decor. A set of these is a great gift idea, too.

The coasters just needed a new look! I used white chalk paint, green and yellow acrylic paint, and a clear varnish. I didn’t use the peach paint pictured below. I changed my mind and used yellow and green instead.

It took three coats of chalk paint to cover the dark pattern of the coasters. I let the paint dry between coats.

To dress the coasters up, I used an adhesive flower stencil. I’ve had much better luck with adhesive stickers than ones that I have to tape down. These are easy to remove, clean, and re-use.

Using a small spouncer is the best way to apply paint. I’ve also discovered along the way that for me, acrylic paint is better than chalk paint when stenciling.

One of the keys to getting crisp painted stencils is to make sure than you only have a small amount of paint on the spouncer. I dipped the spouncer in paint and then dabbed it on a piece of cardboard before applying it to the coaster.

I continued to add paint until I was happy with how it looked. I left the center circle of the flower blank.

After removing the stencil from one coaster, I wiped off any excess paint before moving on to the next one.

To add a center dot to the flower I used the end of a small wood skewer. I dipped it in yellow paint and then carefully added the dot to the center of each flower.

After the paint had time to dry, I added three coats of DuraClear Gloss Varnish to each coaster. I’ve had good luck using this on other painted coasters. Make sure to let each coat dry before adding another one.

This is such an easy way to change the look of inexpensive dollar store coasters. The best part is there are stencils for any decor you might want. making this a great budget friendly gift idea.

To give as a gift, tie a pretty twine bow around a set of them.
