Family Photo Block That is Great for Gift Giving

Looking for the perfect handmade gift? These DIY photo blocks can be used to hold photos, Christmas card or even recipe cards! Personalize them for that special person on your gift list.
This project was actually made with leftovers from other projects I have done. For a full list of the supplies and tutorial follow this link.
First I cut some leftover 2x6 and 2x4 boards to the size I wanted. I cut mine in several sizes to display together but you can also just make one large block.
Diva tip: If you take a wax candle and rub the edges of the wooden block the paint will not stick to those areas making it easier to distress! This is especially helpful when using spray paint.
Spray paint the blocks with an off white color and let it dry. I then took 220 grit sandpaper and distressed the edges of the blocks.
Now for the front of the blocks. I Stenciled the word "Family" on a piece of linen fabric using black acrylic paint.
I then Layer the linen fabric on a piece of burlap cut slightly larger.
To hold the photos I used these wire ornament holders but you could also bend your own.
Drill small holes in the top of the blocks and secured the wires with e6000.
Here is another option. With this option I stenciled the work family directly onto the board. I then attached photos to smaller blocks with the upholstery tacks, backing some with burlap.

That wood finish looks like the material some are using to make the same type of pictures. It is as light as a feather and appears to be of a chalky substance like plaster of paris but less than 1/2 the weight. Do you have any idea what it might be?
