Building Floor to Celing Shelving

When installing wall shelving (made to look "built-in" should you remove that portion of carpeting that would be underneath the shelving? (We intend to add hardwood floors later. Is there a way to "hardwood" along the wall and finish the remainder of the room later? What is the best way to start this improvement?
We are desperate for being able to get items (games, books, cd's movies. files etc. decoratively organized and onto shelves throughout the living/dining rooms area which runs the length of the house.

Yes. You want a flat surface and one that has no play to build on. -

Yes...remove the carpeting so the floor will be completely flat. It would be impossible to remove it once you build the shelves. -

Yes, remove the carpeting. You can always 'close in' the bottom with a baseboad and or cabinetry doors, rather than have to match that space to the new wood flooring.
