Curtain?
We have the same problem. YEARS ago bought a styrofoam box made just for that. I don't know if available anymore but to cover a larger air conditioner, my hubby glued pieces of smooth styro together then painted it. We had lots from packaging. Might find best kind at a furniture store or electronics stores. You can even buy sheets of it at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Another idea...build a rectangular box with four sides and a bottom. The box needs to be deep enough to completely cover the ac unit. Paint it a color of your choice. Hang it from the wall the same way you hang a picture.
Extend your curtain rod and curtains over the area with the A/C unit and when you need to use it just pull the curtains away from the a/c.
