How do I make pine cones shine?

A friend said she baked pine cones to make the resin come out and made the cones shine. However her oven had an unpleasant pine smell for a long time. Is there as way to do this without disagreeable results?

Spray them with high gloss polyurethane, clear spray paint, clear spray glaze.
