How to makeover antique night tables?

I have two antique night tables that are dark wood but the top veneer I need to do something with these the veneer is coming off. Suggestions

Mosaic tile would look nice and you could be original with your pattern. -

You can paint them with a chalk paint. If you don`t want to buy paint, you can make it at home cheaply and easy to try on something first.
