Should I cover outside air conditioner unit

I live in Canada & we get a lot of snow , a friend who is a furnace & airrepairman say no you don't have to but it wont hurt. I do it anyway because snow here if turns to ice which is a lot of weight on the blade & other parts.Helpful Reply -

Our air condioner man said it needs air circulation. Keeping it covered causes rust. Mine is still in use since 1978. Northern climate.Helpful Reply -

For what purpose? I can see placing a board or it to keep snow off the blades, but it still needs air circulation otherwise it might rust.Helpful Reply -

If it is a central unit it will not be necessary but a wall or window unit.. cover can be picked up at most hardware stores.Helpful Reply -

NO! They are built to take outside weather conditions. Covering them completely will trap moisture, cause mold to grow, eat away at the aluminum fins and copper tubing. You can place a piece of plywood on the top, weigh it down to prevent snow from accumulating inside.Helpful Reply -
