What can I do to update this old lamp?

I have some ideas for the shade but the lamp is much bigger than it looks in the photo and definitely from another era. It has been in my Mother's attic for years but still works. Any suggestions?

Paint or add stencils to the shade. Paint the base of the lamp to coordinate with your rooms decor. Some people even cover the lamp base with fabric.

Probably a vintage 'Stiffel' lamp. If you prefer, you could paint the base to coordinate with your room colors, or try white, as it generally works with most colors. Use a contasting circular shade,if desired. Better in a larger room, or atop a large , tall piece of furniture.

Paint it a bold, cool color. Switch out the shade for something simple and streamlined to contrast all of the ornamentation on the lamp base.

I have painted lamps like that.... I painted the base one color, then mask it off. Then I've gotten those little cans of German model car paint that comes in many colors.... then I paint a base coat, and if you want something unusual you can hold the can far away to get a dusting of one irridescent color, and then do another color turning the lamp as you go - I will usually do 3 colors over the base, and then clear coat to seal it all for cleaning. Gives a great irridescent light.

I used Rustoleum Oil Rubbed bronze on my bright brass (gold) . Updated and they look great!

I’ve used wine bottle covers and old pieces of costume jewelry to cover a lamp base instead of painting or stenciling. That way you can interchange with the seasons.....
