Rock & Roll Under Stair Playroom

As a kid, I had a friend with a playroom under the stairs, and I used to lay awake at night imagining how great it would be to have a space like that of my own. The very first time we toured the house that we now own, I was thrilled to see the space under the basement stairs because it brought back all those memories.
I immediately told my husband that if we bought the house, I planned to turn it into a fabulous play space for our someday children. Although the space is a mere 35 inches wide, I knew it had enormous potential!

Over the years, we worked hard not to fill up the space with too much stuff {because I didn't want to come to rely on it for storage}, but it did house some Christmas decorations and a few other random items.

Fast forward 7 years from when we bought the house, and we now have two boys (ages 3 and 2). The boys never even knew the space under the stairs existed, so when we were ready to finally convert it to a fun play space, we were careful to keep the secret until the space was complete!

At long last, we were able to show them their brand new, rock and roll themed playroom, and ever since it's all we can do to drag them out for dinner and bed time.

We wanted to create a space that could grow with the boys for many years, so we avoided typical pre-school themes, and instead went with their love of music!

We covered the ceiling in records, created a music themed gallery wall, that includes storage for their small instruments and noise makers, provided a place for them to display their own art work. And since they both love books, we also gave them storage for a collection of books about music and created a cozy reading space in the back.

On the other wall of the narrow play space, we created a ping pong ball wall coaster using pipes and various plumbing connectors and elbows.

We added lots of fun lighting to the space, and even converted the door to a dutch door.
