DIY Ledge Shelves
I tried building these shelves awhile back and bought the cheapest wood possible that Lowe's had, this was a huge mistake. The boards were bent, they weren't straight, and they wouldn't line up properly. When you're buying your boards, be sure to hold them together and make sure they'll sit flush together. I don't remember exactly which type of wood I used, but I do know it WAS NOT the cheapest I could get. All together for wood I spent about $20 to make two 6' long shelves.
I started by sanding the boards down.
After they were sanded down, I stained them. I used Rustoleum's Carbon Gray and applied in the direction of the wood grain.
Once they were dried, I predrilled holes into the 1x4 and 1x3. I used 2" screws to hold them together. Once the 1x4 and 1x3 were secured together, I predrilled holes into the 1x2 and 1x3 and secured those using 2" screws as well. (This step is a lot easier if you have help holding the shelves while you screw into them).
We secured them to the studs in the wall, using 2" screws, three screws total. One in the middle, and one on the ends.

I'm going to try this over doorways in my house! I tore out old cabinets a few years ago, I kept them in pieces, have the trim.
