Give Your Room a Makeover for £60

My lounge was missing a focal point and I was determined to give the room a lift.

In need of some TLC

It was looking more like a kids snug then an adults living room

Have your wood cut for free at b&q

I headed to my local diy store b&q and picked up some MDF

They advise me they cut the wood for free so I went ahead and asked them to cut the sheet into 10cm width strips at 1.4m high. I roughly knew the hight I wanted as I measured my walls before I headed off.

I bought the 2.44m x 1.22m sheet 6mm thick for £30

Testing it out

when I got home I placed the MDF strips up against the wall to visualise what design I was going for.

Once I was satisfied I proceeded with my project.

Cutting then wood

I picked up a two decorative trim moulds at another diy store (WICKS for £3 each as I wanted to give the panelling a nice finish on top. Once home I measured them and cut them to the length of my back wall.

Paneling stuck and ready for painting

I used adhesive glue from the pound store to stick the strips starting with the frame. Once I had the bottom, sides and top adhered to the wall I then added the internal strips making sure I had the same width between each strips from top to bottom. I left 16 inches between each strips

At wicks I had also picked up paint an undercoat aswel as wood paint. I did two coats of undercoat and two coats of satin wood paint.

As I bought wicks own make these paint pots only cost me £6 a tin

Deciding on what to do above

When I had finished adding the decorative mouldings and finished painting all the strips I wanted to give the rest of the wall a luxury feel

Adding the last touch

I had left over wallpaper from I love Wallpaper which I loved and proceeded to wallpaper the top half. It feels alot more grown up in here now, we need a few more things to add like cushions, throws, side tables. But you can really appreciate what paneling can do to a room.

I did this project by my self, I took my time, didn't rush it and enjoyed the process hopefully you can give this ago aswel.

It looks great! I was just wondering if you had to caulk around the MDF strips?
