I moved into an apartment about 6 months ago and am finally getting to the kitchen. My landlord has given me permission to paint and will provide what ever I need. The kitchen is paneling and over the years no one has cleaned it, the area around the stove is the worst with grease. Should I put kilz on the paneling first and then paint? What type of paint would you suggest I use ?
Thank you

Clean first with white vinegar and blue dawn dish soap to remove the grease.ally to completely dry, apply Kilz primer, allow to dry and paint with a Latex paint

This doesn't answer your question specifically, but a fun way to decorate when a renter is to use fabric on the walls. You put it up with liquid starch (you can get it at Walmart in the area that sells detergents and clorox). You dip the fabric in the starch...place it on the wall and it dries like wall paper. The cool thing is, that when you move, you can just strip it off super easy....so you can have color, charm and beauty ...any way you wish...without a lot of hassle.

A good degreaser will clean as well as dull the paneling. Wash it all up really good first. Let dry, the give it 2 good coats of Kilz before painting it.

I would use TSP to clean, then use Kilz and finally paint with a semi-gloss for ease of future cleaning.
