DIY Makeover: Farmhouse Built-in Dining Bench

Let’s get started.When we first looked at this dining area we were having the hardest time trying to figure out how to maximize this space for our 6 person family.We wanted to not only maximize the space but to also give the space a much needed makeover. The paint color was so tired and boring looking and the style of the dining chandelier was very dated.So we decided we were going to build a custom made built-in bench eat-in dining area ourselves!!! Yes we were a little in over our heads but it sounded like a fun project that we could do together and also save some money!
We had to plan out the design for the space. We found many DIY articles on pinterest and youtube as well as other sites to get a better idea of how to accomplish this project.
First we drew a level line where we wanted the bench supports to go. We attached 1×4 pine boards to the wall for the back bench support.
We built the supports on the floor and framed the bench area.
Added 3/4″ and 1/2″ plywood sheets for the bench and 1×5 boards for the trim on the bottom.
For the back walls we used 1×4 boards then glued and brad nailed them directly to the walls.
TIME TO PAINT THE BENCH A SEMI-GLOSS WHITE!
We didn’t like the board and batten on the back wall so we removed them. We also didn’t like the thin 1/2″ plywood sheet on the top of the bench. We didn’t give it a strong enough support so we went with 2″ solid oak wood countertop and cut them into sections and nailed them in with finishing nails.
Then we stained the top (oil based Minwax stain called Early American) and added shiplap boards to the back with a trim piece to top it off.
THE FINISHED PROJECT EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS!!!

I would also make the table oval or round as well as the benches in a round shape. Easier for the center person to get in & out.

Beautiful, you did a great job! Kids have no problem getting in and out of tight places so it’s functional for your family. I love that you have the seating area with the stools. Great Planning and Great Outcome.

This is cute - especially for large families.
Is it hard to get seated on the bench opposite the chairs? Seems like a lot of ‘scooching’ to get in there and I sure hope they don’t have to get out once the table is full of people. 😉
Definitely would make the benches with hinges for storage.
