Budget Ikea Hack Entry Table and Entryway Organization

With the new year in full swing, do you have a goal to tackle an unruly area of your home? How about the entry way? We decided to hack an Ikea Kallax shelf unit, and then use it to find a place for all the stuff that needed a place to live, while creating a pretty entry.
Check out our video to see how we hacked and organized this Ikea Kallax shelf to create a pretty console for our entryway.
We started our project with a blank wall (shiplap optional!).
In order to make the Kallax shelving a little closer to console height, we added u-shaped legs to the bottom. We used 4x4s in the front for added stability. After attaching the legs to the bottom we flipped the console right side up and slid it into place.
Because we wanted the unit to feel more built-in, we used molding to wrap the front and sides of the bottom. We assembled the molding first, then painted and installed it, nailing to the legs that were attached to the bottom.
After assembling the Ikea Kallax drawer inserts, we added them to the shelving and slid the baskets into the lower shelves. There are lots of options to customize what goes in these shelving units. You can check them out on our blog post.
With errant items here and there, it was time to organize and give everything a place. Each drawer or basket was assigned to house specific items. We even found we had a few empty ones that could be assigned later!
Now that everything has a place, the space is roomy and organized (not to mention that we love how it looks in our home!). What space will you organize this year?

Sunscreen, bug spray, and a flashlight, are items I also like to keep by the front door. Also, spare doggie poop bags.

Have a question about this project?
Awesome!!!! I am wondering if you purchased your unit from Ikea, and if so, did you have to purchase the drawer inserts separately? I don't have a store nearby, but I did tap the picture of drawers in the materials list which took me to Amazon and a third party seller that lists a single drawer unit for, get this, seventy seven dollars!!!!! Not quite a budget helper, LOL. Did you pay over two hundred for your unit?
What is the total cost of these items etc to put together? This is an important aspect of all projects at least for many.
