Is it ever ok to run hard wood floors sideways in a hallway?

I can't afford to buy enough hardwood for the entire bedroom, hallway and living room, at one time. But I want each step to look finished. If I run the hardwood longwise down the hallway, I'll have to leave a rough end to all of the board where it meets the living room.

My foyer and hallway run side to side and looks great. it runs into the great room and that flooring is at an angle. I happen to like it. -

You certainly can. I would always run my material to end up with the finished side at the doorways or other openings. If you needed to leave an unfinished end in an opening you can put a piece of trim or edging down as a temporary finished end. -

They make wooden transition strips to cover the exposed edges. I would look at the place you purchased your flooring or look online. -

I would use a transition strip and wait until you can install it properly . I'm kind of perfectionist when it comes to floors though .
