What is under your carpet? There are many options for both cement slab and raised foundation.
A very popular and economical floor is done using plywood cut into strips, lightly sanded on the edges, nailed down, stained and polyurethaned.
You could also do a painted duck cloth floor which is also fairly affordable.
If you are on a slab, you could paint your floor a solid color or in a pattern. You could also do the paper bag technique if paper bags are still free where you live.
I hope that helps give you some ideas

I just had an Armstrong vinyl floor laid in my TV room, and it looks great (like oak). Dimensions are about 12 x 17 and the cost was approximately $1,300. Easy to clean, and some people have mistaken it for real wood. Only drawback is you cannot use furniture with casters on it. I have put felt furniture pads under legs of This End Up sofa and chair so that they can be "scooted" around to clean underneath.

stained concrete is also quite nice! You can even do a room border!
