I have grown them for years and they are beautiful. Do be cautious with them however. They are used to make digitalis which is a medication to slow heart rate. If you don't have small children around it should be ok.

They multiply by reseeding; seedlings can be dug in spring and moved wherever you want them. They do well in sun or shade. The seedling will grow into a neat mound of big leaves but won't bloom the first year. I live in Tacoma WA where they don't die back in winter and they bloom the second year in late spring/summer. The shaded ones bloom later. The bottom leaves often turn yellow and die. I always snap off any that lay on the ground so as not to give the slugs a place to over winter. The plant looks better too. They can grow to 6 feet tall and don't need staking. After the tall spike blooms side shoots come out and bloom as well. At least that's the case with mine. They are a pure delight and are beautiful in bouquets. They're toxic to animals but I've never had a dog or cat that ate them. Mine just came up one year, maybe planted by birds. I know there are different colors in the stores now so some of the traits I've described may have been lost in the hybridizing.
