When and how do I prune my dwarf "Burning Bush" which is now tall?

My burning bush was supposed to be a dwarf bush. I would trim it each year in the spring, but now it is a huge globe. Can it be cut back to a small size without killing it?

You can prune it while it is dormant, in either late winter or very early spring
