The current wisdom says that pruning encourages growth. That means early spring would be ideal. You don't want to encourage growth as we head into the coldest months here in the northern hemisphere. On the other hand, it is easier to spot and remove dead branches without all of those leaves. Any time is a good time to take out dead wood.

We have fruit trees, maples, cedars and lots of various pine trees and bushes on our property. I had the same question when we moved here. I googled for the answer and found that they all had different times of the year to prune/trim. Also depends on what growing zone you are in. Your local nursery can help with a phone call or visit.

The best time to prune hardwood trees is in the dormant season, winter, or late November to early March. The worst time for pruning these trees is from mid-March to late June. Hardwood trees should be pruned every year from the second to fourth years and then once in three years.Trees and shrubs that flower in mid- to late summer should be pruned in winter or early spring.
