Why didn't my japanese maple tree loose it leaves?

We have a beautiful japanese maple tree in our yard and for some reason, it never dropped it leaves. Here it is frigid cold temps here on the east coast, and there are still brown leaves on the the tree that never fell off even though they are dead. Does anyone have any idea why? I noticed my neighbors tree did the same thing.

They may have frozen, and will drop when it thaws, on the other hand it may have found a warm pocket......... -
