You can use hay bales just hollow out the center add fertilizer. -

Use straw, much better as it doesn't have seeds, not so many bugs and lasts longer. -

Stack concrete blocks, use old windows across the top to make temporary hot houses. You can prop up one side with a stick or dowel rod to vent it as needed. Remove completely once plants are established. It keeps young plants warmer in early spring and nights. -
