I have a wild start of a pine tree, which is in a 10" pot.

It's now grown 2 ft. high....do I need to plant it in the ground for the winter, or is it too late, and will the tree die any way?

If your ground isn't frozen, I'd plant it now. -

Just to be on the safe side, I would wait until spring (we don't know yet how bad this winter will be). That way, it can get fully established through the summer and fall. -

If your ground if frozen, I would wait until winter is over in order for it to grow successfully.
