Apple trees should be pruned in late winter, but you can prune into the spring and summer if you must. Avoid pruning in the fall since this stimulates new growth at the same time the tree should be getting ready for winter.

If they are loaded with apples, the orchards use a 2x4 with a notch for the branch and length to the ground to support the branch.

Adele, I don't know where you live, but most trees need to be pruned in the cold months when the sap is in the roots and trunk. Here in south central Texas that is a guessing game on the coldest time, I try to do it in January or February.

I live in southern Minnesota so I guess I probably really should wait until March to trim them

The best time to prune any tree is in late fall (after the 1st or 2nd HARD frost). The cold stops the tree from pushing sap up to the leaves (they go dormant till it warms back up in the spring (worst time of year to prune). If you prune while sap is still running you need to use fast drying paint or tar to seal the cut area from insects and stop sap from bleeding out of the injury.
