Is it helpful to put small stones on top of the soil in potted plants?

I have some succulents in pots ( small, medium, sized) and 3 dwarf citrus in large pots.

It can help to retain moisture in the pot, especially in summer. I do it just because I want them to look pretty. -

I put small stones around my succulents that I collect from the beach. It cant hurt the plant. -

Small stones, seashells, marbles, or the the half-globe crystals from the craft store can act to keep moisture in by preventing some of the evaporation from the soil, just like Spanish moss or mulch used outdoors. Have fun! -

It also keeps the squirrels from digging in your pots.
