If you are talking about old rubber tire mulch, they are finding that tires have many undesirable chemicals in them including carcinogenic ones like benzene. So definitely not anywhere near garden vegetables or kids.

  • Depending on where you live, I vote for natural mulch. If you have rubber, it can get very hot if left in direct sunlight and not good for plants, children or pets.

FYI... according to the Tv DIY garden guys .... "Lawn & Order" and "Yard Crashers".... natural mulch will have to be replaced every year.... where the recycled tire one.. won't

Natural mulch can be beneficial to soil as it decomposes , unlike tires . Personally , I don't care for the look of tires and fortunately the aren't used much in New England . Also there is much talk about some rubber components not being safe for plants , as mentioned in other comments .

I like rubber mulch better, because it last longer and it comes without termites.
