Skip the 5 gallon buckets, unless you are itching to try it. Here are links for both cinder blocks and wood. Make sure that the cinder blocks or wood is untreated with chemicals. I have made both and each have their own charm. I used troughs from FarmnFleet. Drilled holes in the bottom, and set them on two layers of cement blocks. The beds are about waist high. Filled with 3-4 inches of rock followed by a mixture of potting soil and peat moss.Helpful Reply -

I have used wood that I painted with a non toxic paint. If growing something you eat then DO NOT use pressure treated wood as it may leach some of the toxic chemicals into the soil.Helpful Reply -

Use ground treated timber but line the inside with plastic weed mat so the chemicals won't be absorbed. Also cover the ground with old newspapers to suppress any weed growth. Then fill with soil and/or potting mix.Helpful Reply -

I like concrete blocks, but make sure the ground under them is level. I also dig down a few inches so water and soil does not run out. Wood, unless you use rot resistant like cedar rots after a few years, blocks do not.Helpful Reply -
