Faux Brick Kitchen Island Update

Looking to add some character to your kitchen island or peninsula? We wanted something other than shiplap, but we wanted it to be durable with subtle texture. Faux Brick Panels were the solution!
When we were updating our kitchen, we reworked our kitchen island. It originally had an angle to it, but it didn't leave much space for our dining room table.
We decided that we really didn't need 6 feet between our cabinets and our island. So we moved it 18 inches closer to the cupboards. We also made the decision to straighten the island.
We were able to reuse our same cabinets, but had to get a new countertop and needed to figure out what to do with the sides and back of the cabinets.
Since the backs had to come off, we had to figure out what to do with the edge around the cabinets that stuck out and the back of the drawer glides that also poked through the back.
We had thought about doing the 1/4 inch plywood cut as shiplap, but we would need to reinforce the plywood so that the center of each back wouldn't bow in.
After we realized that faux shiplap and real shiplap weren't going to work, we started looking for other options. That's when I thought faux brick may work.
We glued and nailed a few scrap wood strips down the middle of each cabinet and then were ready to attach the faux brick. We were able to purchase one 4x8' brick wallboard panel and cut it to fit. We attached it with liquid nails and brad nails.
We then caulked the seams, added corner trim, and then whitewashed the faux brick.
The subtle texture was just what we had wanted.
We love how the space came together!

Your kitchen turned out amazing! I'm normally not a fan of faux brick anywhere except on the outer walls (so it looks more believable)...but I must admit, it looks fabulous on your island!!

How long is your island? We are about to start a kitchen remodeling project and part of it is to upgrade our island--trying to figure out how many seats we can squeeze in the space and still have everyone be comfortable and yours looks like we want ours to look. Your room looks fabulous!! Thanks!
