How to Blend and Layer Paint on Furniture

Denise from Salvaged Inspirations painted this stunning retro China cabinet with a fun blending technique!

This makeover was a creative stretch for me, but I had so much fun! I used four Chalk Mineral Paint colors with blending and layering techniques to create this gorgeous spring rainbow cabinet!

Here's what it looked like before I started.

To start the makeover I removed the glass and handles, and cleaned the piece. You can use White Lightning for this part.

If you're painting a dark piece with lighter paint and are concerned about bleed through I recommend BOSS, which blocks odors, stains, and stops bleed through!

The bottom of this retro cabinet was painted in Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint, which is a true white! The inside of this of the cabinet was painted in Kudzu and Rebel Yellow. Using a spray bottle with small mists of water really helps to achieve this blended look.

I painted Kudzu, Rebel Yellow, and Peony on the front drawers. I applied them all at the same time and didn’t wait for one to dry before applying the next. Once you start spraying and blending, the color will be pulled down further, so keep that in mind when deciding how far down to paint.

I used a spray bottle to lightly mist the layers of WET paint. If you wait until the paint dries, you won’t be able to blend. Once I give the wet paint a light spray, I take my brush and lightly run it downwards, leaving the brush strokes at the end. The more you spray and brush the paint, the more blended it becomes.

To get the crisp Cotton to blend into the spring colors I painted on more of the white and used a chip brush to feather it INTO the spring colors above it. Holding the brush vertically made long brush strokes which I liked. Another tip is to keep the brush pretty dry.

For the final details, I painted the handles and trim in Cotton. After it was all dry I top coated with Best Dang Wax in Clear.

Isn't this piece just lovely? Perfect for springtime!
