Question about a Coffee pot?

Question

I got me a percolator and I have NO idea how to use it......Help?  Thanks in advance.

the coffee grounds go in a basket that has been lined by a coffee filter.the basket usually sits on a post. The coffee pot should have marks on it for x amount of cups to brew, add water to the cups you need. Add power cord..some detach , and plug in. It will warm up and start to percolate . The more it perks, the stronger the coffee becomes.

You want larger ground coffee if you grind your own. There are filters for percolators but a basket paper filter works. Just push a hole through the center with the post. Fill the pot to the desired level, assemble tube (post) and basket into the pot. There is a place for the post to stand in. Put cover on filter basket if you have one. Place lid on pot and plug in. When it quits percolating (you will hear it) the coffee is done. I like to remove the basket at this point to keep grounds out of my coffee. Keep the pot plugged in until you are done with coffee to keep it warm.

All the percolators I ever used had a metal basket and required no filter. This is because they were made before drip coffee pots were invented. If it's electric, just 'set it and forget it'. I remember them fondly. You can still get them at thrift stores and also new. Because the water gets hotter the quality of the coffee is better.

If yours is the kind you set on a burner, you have to watch it unlike one you can plug in.

The kind you put on top of stove burner? My Aunt used this all day. Fill top with dry coffee( no filter ), fill metal or corning ware coffee pot to level with water,so it can come to boil. Then turn off, enjoy fresh brewed cups.

Your coffee beans will require grinding for use in a percolator (larger grind than for espresso, etc.). You can now purchase paper liners for your size coffee maker. Use very cold water that has been filtered to improve the taste of the coffee. When brewing is finished, carefully remove basket with grounds and replace lid. This insures your coffee doesn't get bitter. Washing the pot with baking soda at least weekly makes for better tasting coffee.
