When I was a homebuilder carpenters would use kitchen cabinets as the base for an island. Once a plan, layout and design was made. Then the countertop guys would come in with a countertop design.
Several questions to be addressed. Do you want storage? Seating? Electrical? Water?
Once you decide, then you can either get plans to build one or you can convert a piece of furniture or cabinets into an island. Especially if you don't need seating. I took a storage cabinet and just moved it to the center of the kitchen for an island.
Hi Nina. You can make an island using an old bureau, or a couple kitchen cabinets, or just on top of 4 legs. Then you can choose what you want the top to be made out of. I would love to have an island where the top is made from a sheet of stainless steel. I do a lot of baking and I would be able to roll out dough on it.
Islands can be many different styles, either moveable on casters, or stationary in a fixed position. If you decide on one that moves, make sure you purchase casters that are robust enough to support the weight of the island with countertop plus the weight of items that are stored in the island.
Spending a little extra money on quality large casters that manually lock in place will make the island safer and easier to use.
