How do I use the space where a microwave was built in?

Old microwave was built into cabinets. New microwave goes above stove. I now have an awkward space above counter that is shallowsince we cut the shelf even with cabinets. Thinking charging station or perhaps a place for mail and keys. It's a small house so I need to make use of every book and cranny. Thx!

How about cookbooks.
A charging station is a wonderful idea. So is a space for keys and mail. You have the right ideas, go for it. Determine what you need most, then proceed. I live in a small house myself, and yes, every nook and cranny is important.
I think that's a great idea! You could get some pretty baskets that go with your decor and slide them into the empty space. Mail on one side and keys or glasses, etc on the other. Or you could make a charging station the same way and tuck everything in the baskets so the messy cords are out of sight.
changing station is temporary .. but do you want it in the kitchen? you could get an attractive tray/basket to hold fruit, potatoes, onions depending on location, or a shallow tray to hold mail/key... if there is still an electrical outlet there you could make a 'charging station' for phones/tablets, etc.
