What about a tension rod and a fabric curtain? We have a cotton shower curtain from Target that is beautiful. Or just use one curtain panel.

Open shelves, and cabinets that don't reach the ceiling, are all magnets for grease. Been there. I had some lovely bits and pieces on top of my kitchen (b4 reno.) and I would have to get the ladder out every few weeks, and scour the grease and grime off the top of the cupboards, and the decorative items as well. Tho' perhaps if I had had a better exhaust fan system it might??? not have been so bad.
