I may have read the question wrong. I thought it was a lighting issue.. for that you can use rope lights, under the upper cabinets, atop the upper cabinets or even along the floor in front of the lower cabinets. I've used them before and used those little hooks that screw in to hold it in place.Helpful Reply -

I would remove that shade over the only window, and if privacy is an issue, I would use a privacy film that allows light to get through. https://www.amazon.com/Rabbitgoo-Frosted-Privacy-Decorative-Bathroom/dp/B01CXWR9U6/ref=pd_rhf_se_s_cp_0_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01CXWR9U6&pd_rd_r=HB6Z4CVQNR5N453MVHCW&pd_rd_w=RtS9V&pd_rd_wg=0XdTJ&psc=1&refRID=HB6Z4CVQNR5N453MVHCW or use some one-way film.... https://www.amazon.com/Window-Privacy-Non-Adhesive-Decorative-Control/dp/B0773DXKKF/ref=pd_sbs_201_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=KB7KXQ76R0FFEWGG5HFRThen I would replace that ceiling fixture to a multiple light one, LED would be most energy efficient... https://www.homedepot.com/b/Lighting-Track-Lighting/N-5yc1vZc7ndhttp://www.lampsplus.com/products/pro-track-european-style-6-light-wave-bar-track-light-kit__y9036.htmlI would also repaint the ceiling a bright white in Satin to increase reflectivity to make it brighter or even add a bit of white metallic paint to it.I would also put a pendant light over the island.... https://www.homedepot.com/s/kitchen%2520island%2520pendants?NCNI-5I would also add some under cabinet light pucks or LEDs.... https://www.homedepot.com/s/kitchen%2520under%2520cabinet%2520lights?NCNI-5Helpful Reply -

How about a back splash made of faux ceiling tiles (Amazon for under $10 for 24in squares) Painting cabinets might be what you could do too.Helpful Reply -
