How do I brighten up a kitchen on a tight budget?

It is so dark, but not sure what I can do.

Clean with KrudKutter. Then use furniture restore you just wipe on. Made my cabnets look like new. KrudKutter cleans off grease and dirt and old polish.

I may have read the question wrong. I thought it was a lighting issue.. for that you can use rope lights, under the upper cabinets, atop the upper cabinets or even along the floor in front of the lower cabinets. I've used them before and used those little hooks that screw in to hold it in place.

Kimberly is so right. Good lighting is so important in the kitchen. Rope lights have become so inexpensive and under the cabinets is perfect.

I would also repaint the ceiling a bright white in Satin to increase reflectivity to make it brighter or even add a bit of white metallic paint to it.

How about a back splash made of faux ceiling tiles (Amazon for under $10 for 24in squares) Painting cabinets might be what you could do too.

Repaint walls and cabinets a light color

Add color co-ordinated backsplash in a subtle pattern

Reorganize inside of cabinets to rid counter top of clutter

Remove curtain from window and replace with an inexpensive shutter (same new color as walls) for a cleaner line

Make sure light fixture is clean to give off as much light as possible
