Depends on what you are starting with and your definition of "update". No one has unlimited money to spend. Every kitchen remodel has a budget and what you can do depends on the size of that budget and what you want or need. Many Hometalkers paint their kitchens or replace hardware and consider that to be "updated". Not a lot of money to paint cabinets and counter tops but a lot of work to do it well.

Our new to us house has 90's builder grade everything, from cabinets to countertops, lighting and flooring, backsplash and white appliances (they all work like new). But they are dated and ugly. We have painted most of the rooms already in a soft gray including the kitchen. We plan to purchase refrigerator and dishwasher wraps or skins for those appliances, and will buy a new microwave for over the range. Haven't yet found the perfect lighting, but you can find some real bargains on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. We plan to add wood in a Shaker style to our plain flat cabinet doors and drawers and then paint them. Formica countertops will be painted as will the ugly tile backsplash. We bought all our paint on a $10.00 off per gallon and purchased enough to finish all the rest of the house. Flooring will have to wait (maybe we will win the lottery). Best wishes.

  • Hi Nancy - This is what we did to update our kitchen floors. Hope it helps with a little inspiration. Good luck! Hugs, Holly

Depending on your budget and desires, go to the second hand stores, flea markets, yard sales, and if available Restores. There are reused recycle products on a contractor size scale too, look for those in your area.
Sometimes it is as simple as new curtains, valance, towels, pictures...all readily available at dollar stores.
