A quick update is new handles. This will help whether you paint or not. But I agree with painting them. I'm painting my cabinets right now, and since I can't afford tile, and am a painter, I am painting tile onto my wall (subway tile). There is not tile there at all, and this faux treatment is making the kitchen upgrade!! -

Cheap? Clean all surfaces, then shine with Windex or a furniture polish that fits the material and declutter. More money: paint, change hardware, update backsplash, replace lighting and flooring, knock out a wall or two, build an island, replace all appliances with stainless steel, replace a perfectly good double sink with a tub of a farmhouse sink. Clean again.
